Have you ever heard John tell the story about the little girl who had night terrors, how the parents tried everything and nothing worked. I heard him tell it a lot. Maybe some of you were in Denver last December and may have remembered the close of the tour. It was so special because we had an 83 year old women and an 11 year old girl in the same workshop. John commented on this and said, ” an 83 year old and an 11 year old in the same workshop, this is Anusara!”. While the rest of us were assisting each other in drop backs, this sweet little girl was doing tick tocks. Abby and Emma were assisting just like they did in Cincinnati only 2 months earlier. Everyone seemed remarkably happy. John addressed this girI often, taught her throughout the practice and shared with us how he had helped her with her night terrors, how he told her to say 3 things she was grateful for every night before she went to bed and how after years of suffering every night this sweet little girl never had a night terror again.
Well I know the story very well because the little girl is mine. [read more on]
This 5 week series was so popular last time that I had to bring it back by popular demand. This series explores the individual classes of yoga asana with a different class of poses each week. We will look at in depth: standing poses, inversions, arm balances, back bends, forward bends, hip openers and twists. Learn optimal alignment in poses you are already doing so you can learn poses that – up until now- you never thought you could do.
Standing Poses are the most fundamental class of postures. Proper alignment is most easily learned through standing poses. They teach us to be grounded in our stance and to hug into our center and then extend out. They teach us how to bring our inner thighs back and apart and how to scoop our tailbone. When alignment is understood fully in standing poses, it provides us with all we need to know to be able to do all classes of asana. To know forward bends is to love them. Learn how to stop doing them like you are doing a back bend and accept them fully for what they are. Do you know that hip openers done out of alignment will indeed make your hips tighter? Feel what it really feels like to open your hips. And come enjoy the pure bliss of back bends when your shoulder blades are plugged in and you lead from the back body. Find freedom in twists when you learn to create space and discover first hand why arm balances are hip openers and should more aptly be called “leg squeezers”. Experience how by treating your side planks and upward dogs as standing poses, you will see stars. And learn how to make every pose therapeutic. Make friends with yoga poses like you never have before.

Are you attached to your suggestions? I am. Why couldn’t I have ever seen that before. It is as clear as day. Not only is it as clear as day now that I see it, I can also see how much pain this has caused me and how it leads to an enormous amount of separation.
Let me give you an example, have you ever given someone a suggestion that they didn’t follow up on? You knew it would totally help them and you just really only wanted to help. They seemed like they welcomed the idea and even appreciated it, maybe even went so far to suggest that they were going to use your suggestion or idea. But then nothing. Nothing happened. You never heard anything else about it. There was no follow through. You don’t think to take into account that just as you are giving this person suggestions, a multitude of others are also giving this same person great suggestions as well; they only really want to help too. Instead you feel slighted, unappreciated, not valued. You create separation between this person where really none exist. Have you had this experience?
So why are we so attached to our suggestions?
Is it about needing to be right? Is it about needing to be heard? Why can’t we lovingly make our helpful suggestions and then let them go, not insist on having them implemented. Healthy change is certainly longed for by all but what is it about not having our suggestions implemented that gets sticky?
I would love to hear from the community on this one. I think I have room for tremendous growth here. It seems to not matter whether it is our family, partners, children or our students – even our teachers, we demand to not only be heard but also for action to be taken.
Any suggestions??
Just asking.
You probably have heard me say, “If I had $5 for every downward facing dog I have adjusted, I would be rich.” Now here is your opportunity to have me look at your downward facing dog pose. After Swami Jaya Devi’s class, you can line up and have your turn while you watch other students have theirs. If your downward facing dog is not a completely blissful experience, you do not want to miss this opportunity to be assisted verbally and physically. Do you drop your arm bones toward the earth, instead of lifting them up toward the sky? Is the back of your heart contracted and rounded instead of lovingly melting down toward the earth? Does the pose annoy your wrists? This clinic was created for you. This will only take a couple of minutes and guaranteed to change your pose and your practice. Think your dog is already perfect, then come challenge me to find something to make it more beautiful. Have a tweak in another pose, get back on line and I can look at that too. If you do not feel free in a yoga pose, it means there is a more conscious choice. I will guide you to your own optimal expression of your poses so you can experience more freedom on and off the mat.
